Trekking in Gastein – Exclusive moments in the mountains

Crystal clear air, the sound of cow bells and alpine pastures covered by a sea of blossoms - that is trekking around Gastein. For centuries the farmers of the valley have been taking their cattle to the higher mountain pastures during the summer months. 55 alpine huts around Gastein offer food and drinks. The Alpine dairymen make many kinds of milk products from fresh alpine milk. Path Böcksteiner Höhenweg

Duration approx. 1 hour 15 min.

On this forested path, rich in beautiful corners and dream-like panoramas of the valley, you slowly walk uphill in the direction of Bad Gastein. You arrive at the waterfalls of the Palfnerbach brook of Bad Gastein; later, at the parking area on the Raika bank, you can take the bus to Böckstein or return to Böckstein on the so-called Elisabeth path.

Nassfeld (Sportgastein 1599m)

Take the old path Nassfeldweg and passing the alpine huts Astenalmen (worth a first break!) you reach Sportgastein, after having seen waterfalls, bridges and gorges. After a typical Austrian meal in one of the many alpine huts you can choose between another trip on the marvelous nature trail of the National Park Hohe Tauern, or return to Böckstein by bus.

This romantic but at the same time also wild path has already been the stage of many scenes of films such as Via Mala with Mario Adorf, Season of the Witch with Nicolas Cage.

Radeckalpe (1573m)

A path of the alpine dairymen, closed to cars, crosses the Anlauftal valley and takes you to the restaurant Radeckalpe on the slopes of Mount Ankogel. The hike in the Anlauftal valley is particularly beautiful and rich in new impressions - you will cross forests up to the alpine hut Radeckalm from where you will enjoy a stunning view of the end of the valley with Mount Ankogel and its glaciers. A very attractive destination for the next hiking tour.

Important for all dog owners: the path goes along a refreshing brook.

Alpine hut Bockhartseehütte (1977m)

From the hut Valeriehaus (Sportgastein) take the path (open for cars) to the power station of the Bockhartsee lake until you reach the old miners’ houses from where another marked path takes you to the Bockhartsee lake. Before the last bend turn onto another path going up the mountain with many serpentines. Enjoy the marvelous view and the game goulash in the hut. Your dog can take a refreshing bath in the mountain lake.

Alpine hut Böckfeldalm

A pleasant path with many panoramic views takes you uphill through the forest. You will have the opportunity to admire Böckstein and the panorama of the mountains in front. The alpine hut Böckfeldalm invites visitors to have a break tasting a typical Austrian snack, the "Brettljause".

From Mount Korntauern to Mallnitz (2460m)

Duration approx. 4 hours, Korntauern-Mallnitz approx. 3,5 hours

Of course there are also more challenging hiking paths offered for all expert hiking fans. The ascent of this path is in part quite steep offering unique views of the surrounding peaks. In ancient times, this path was an important street for merchants going from North to South and vice versa. The alpine pass of Mount Korntauern is situated at 2460 meters. Then the path goes down to the South reaching the hut Hannoverhaus (2772 m), an alpine hut without food and drink service, Mindener Hütte (2428 m) and at least the hut Hagener Hütte (2446 m). After a meal in this hut, the path leads down crossing alpine pastures up to Mallnitz from where it is possible to return by train to Böckstein via the Tauern tunnel. Actually, a documentary film is being shown on TV about the "Römerstrasse", the Romans’ road.

From Altböckstein the roads goes uphill in the direction of the Healing Gallery, Gasteiner Heilstollen; at the forested path turn and continue in the direction of the Hieronymushaus. Now towards Mount Blumfeldköpfl, then crossing some sunny slopes near the ski area.

The path continues crossing below the cable car Goldbergbahn in a southerly direction up to lake Knappenbäudelsee. Crossing the Weissbachtal valley you will reach again the Nassfeld plateau.
